I'm sorry to be so dense, Paul - but I'm not sure I'm making your
distinction here. You are saying you needed OSX on all the Macs in order
to share the USB printer between them? I thought that's what I said I
thought you were thinking (yikes!)? Which Mac the printer is hooked up
to is surely irrelevant so long (as you say) they're all OSX?

Which is a pity cause I wanted to share between OSX and 8.6. Oh well.
