Apple Data Detectors were released during the time frame when Apple was accused of being most confused. It along with OpenDoc, QuickDraw GX, and geoport modems found some adherents but largely went ignored. Apple Data Detectors was built upon AppleScript and its interface was contextual menu items. The detectors were data(text) parsers that looked patterns in selected data that matched the criteria of the installed detectors. If relevant data was found it was linked to specific actions which could be executed from a contextual menu item. The included detector was one for internet URLs. If I were to select some text in a simple text document and that text contained "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" the detector would recognize that as perhaps being an E-mail address. A right click would then provide options to open that in an E-mail program. It also recognized web page URLs, ftp sites etc. It was quite customizable. Using the Data Detector control panel the user could select what data to look for and what actions would be available to work with the data. Apple shipped URL detectors with the package and had geographic, and currency detectors available for download.
