In the days when 100 MB was a big drive for me I used to print out
Directory lists. No this was not on PC but a platform still respected

I am using OS 9.1 and have been trying to figure an easy way to do
this. I never wrote an Applescript but suppose I could try.
But is there another, easier way?

What happens when, with a window open in list view, you choose "Print Window" from the File menu?

(I'd try it myself, but my printer is broken.)

 Nothing.

And printing the screen alone won't give me a list of hundreds of
graphics files but only what shows on the screen.

This latter is not normally correct at all. If you have your directory in list view and file/print window, it will print all the contents of the window and all the contents of all the folders that are opened (arrow down) no matter that they do not fit on screen. I have just done it in 9.1 and do it all the time... All image files are evident as well as all else... You must click the arrows and arrange things how you want to see them in print. And remember that if you have too many options ticked in view options you might not get the width of the window view printed on one page. But your printer should be able to produce all.

Well David congratulations you got me into the ballpark ( cricket
match? ). This is much closer to what I need but still not perfect.

I experimented by reducing font size to the minimal 9 and narrowed
the colums as much as I could and still have essential info.

This resulted in a page that showed everything but the file type.
Which might be enough but the program insists on putting the file
type on a separate sheet. Which is rather wasteful and
inconvenient.. Maybe a spreadsheet printer? NAAH ! I gave the last
one away. I hate the pin matrix noise !

I'll keep trying though thanks,
