Hi, welcome to the list! I assume you're using the built-in video on the 8500, & have no other video cards connected? It reminds me of a situation that frequently occurs with Nubus PPCs when they have the video set to the HPV/AV card or the built-in video, & the monitor is attached to the other port, but that probably isn't the case when you just have 1 port.... I see you zapped, but that may not be enough to clear the PRAM. One thing I'd try in these kind of situations right off the bat is remove the power plug, open it up (a non-trivial thing to be doing all the time on a 8500, I know how you feel; I had an 8100 once, with the same case), remove the PRAM battery & let it sit a few hours, or overnight. The press the ltttle black CUDA button that's mounted on a little metal square (I think it's just under the PCI slots -- I had a 7200 and a 7600, but the mobo might be different on an 8500 -- anyone?) for half a minute or so.
