I see you zapped, but that may not be enough to clear the PRAM. One thing
I'd try in these kind of situations right off the bat is remove the power
plug, open it up (a non-trivial thing to be doing all the time on a 8500, I
know how you feel; I had an 8100 once, with the same case), remove the PRAM
battery & let it sit a few hours, or overnight. The press the ltttle black
CUDA button that's mounted on a little metal square (I think it's just under
the PCI slots -- I had a 7200 and a 7600, but the mobo might be different on
an 8500 -- anyone?) for half a minute or so. Then reassemble, & try to boot
again.
