Where are you now? Can you get anything to boot?

Have you tried holding down the 'shift' key to turn Extensions off?

Can you boot with any CD (Mac Install, TT)

If you can, open your harddrive -> System folder -> Extensions
move everything in that folder to 'Extensions (Disabled)'. If that folder does not exist, create one at the same level as 'Extensions'.
Go to System folder -> Preferences and trash 'Finder preference'

Try to restart normally.

If successful restart, move about 5 Extensions at a time back into 'Extensions' and restart.
keep repeating the process until it refuses to boot, which will give you the culprit (1 of the 5)

Good luck

If both ends not terminated could it cause m/bd. dmg/slowdown/confus'n?

-5/5/05- FYI
Got TechTool Pro CD to mount&test IBM HD>Finder/file struct. dmg/no repair.
Put Seagate 2.2g in, lil flakey but is settling down. T/T sez IBM HDD's
failing.
TechToolPro2.1.1 CD is a great app. but it couldn't repair dmg'd file struct's.

-previous day-
I got 8500 to give me desktop- like it was before- but Finder quits + freezes.
I found tiny CUDA button (what is it?) Held it down 1 min. (located on m/bd.
at left corner of cpu/G3 card). I disconn. ZIP & CD drives. Start-up began, was
flakey. 300 i CD drive may be one cause- put in 12x drive. ID now #6 w/term.

HD is ID#0 w/term. Does ID#6 req. termin.-or is Mac#7 a term on that end?

?) 60? pin male block, center/bot/inside m/bd.- longer than a 50pin- for_?
Another male slot on upper right, inside m/bd., forgot to count pins- it's for_?

?) Has anyone put on/off switch on pwr. wires- to turn off 2nd int. HDD? I so,
which wire/s are patched into- 5v. or 12 v.- or does HDD use both voltages?

Glad I joined this list of mac-gurus. I have learned 1) where the CUDA is,
2) I have to set termination + ID's correctly, 3) a bad CD drive is not good,
4) Grey screen w/live cursor may be from corrupt Finder/file structure,
(but it acted the same when I tried a cpl. other drives-I can't figure that
out!)

Keeping (even) old Macs going cuts into retirement/fishing/mcy/car work.
The nicer the weather, the more they crap out. They run best in the winter :o(

My thanks to Glen, Fluxstringer, Bill J., David for the help and encouragement!

Yooper Jim -- retired, got a Mac, now have 8, a website, no time, I'm tired.
