I don't think the CUDA has anything to do with peripherals, just the processor.
How else to explain attaching various external drives?
You want the mother board to know that there is a new processor.
Ron
I quote from Crescendo / PCI G3 or G4 Installation Manual:
After installing Sonnet Software
1. Shut down and open computer
2. Remove processor card
3. Remove Level 2 cache card
4. Reset CUDA switch
5. Install Crescendo/PCI Processor Upgrade card
6. Close computer
7. Turn on computer
Ron
I got 8500 to give me desktop- like it was before- but Finder
quits + freezes.
I found tiny CUDA button (what is it?) Held it down 1 min.
(located on m/bd.
at left corner of cpu/G3 card). I disconn. ZIP & CD drives.
Start-up began, was
flakey. 300 i CD drive may be one cause- put in 12x drive. ID now
#6 w/term.

Always reset the CUDA AFTER changing hardware config .
NOT before !

______________
to mean he had changed the drive and then had a flakey startup. If
he changed the drive after the machine booted from the other startup
doesn't the Cuda have to be reset again? As the 12x drive is a
different hardware component?
