>In a recent loss of many things during a rebuild
after a virus like series of system problems etc
I find I cannot get my printer to run
Does your 16/600PS have a built-in hard drive? It could be flaky.
Mine does, and it is indeed flaky.
Since the incoming "jobs" are buffered on the hard drive, strange printer
behavior, such as loosing the page setup parameters in between jobs,
could be due to the hard drive.
Also, although "persistent" parameters are supposed to be stored in the
printer's NVRAM, some such parameters may be stored on the hard drive,
when one is present.
A 16/600PS which has a hard drive should work fine without the drive,
just as a Pro 630 without the third-party hard drive should work fine
with a hard drive (Apple never made one for this printer, only for the
16/600PS).
The hard drive one my 16/600PS is 250 MB, although the Adobe Font Folio
drive, which is usually found only on Linotronics and costs $10,000 just
for the drive, is actually only a 105 MB drive, and earlier Adobe
PostScript imagesetters were provided with even smaller drives.
You don't need 250 MB for a 16/600PS or Pro 630 drive.
80 MB is more than enough, and 40 MB would be fine, too, if it wasn't for
compatibility problems between the Conner 40 MB drives and the
LaserWriter's firmware.
IBM drives have no issues with these LaserWriters.
Yes, these printers accept only 2.5" SCSI drives, not EIDE/UATA, so a
hand-me-down drive from a PB 500 should be fine.

An HD problem would indeed explain the " virus like" problem . Since
we have established in the past week that no one has SEEN an OS 9
virus.
