If it can be fixed with a print cartridge, I would recommend to go that way
rather than any other way. It's like with a car really. If it stops and you
can get it to go by putting in gas, this is usually the easiest and cheapest
method.

In case you don't find the above helpful, go to a website called
www.fixyourownprinter.com and look at the FAQs and diagnostic charts and
kits and forum.
