Hello David et al:
Unfortunately I could not get the PowerLogix 1GHz CPU
upgrade working in my 8500. The problem was that no
video card would work with this upgrade. I tried my
Radeon Mac PCI, a Rage 128 (from a Blue & White) and a
Voodoo5 5500. With all cards, I got severe video
corruption and the machine would freeze with a minute.
Without the associated video extensions enabled, thus
no 2D or 3D acceleration, the CPU upgrade worked
perfectly and was incredibly fast. Having the 1MB
backside cache running at 1GHz certainly helped to
overcome the slow 50MHz bus speed of our PCI Power
Macs. Believe me, I tried everything to get this CPU
upgrade working with the video cards, but in the end I
had to give up and purchased a Newer Technology 500MHz
upgrade from eBay, as my original 400MHz Sonnet
Crescendo card was somehow fried and will not boot the
8500 anymore.
In contacting PowerLogix support, I also received
"astonishingly curt/minimal replies...with no REAL
answers to my questions!" I did get them to
acknowledge the fact that "certain machines will not
work correctly with this CPU upgrade" OWC surprisingly
gave me the option to return the card for store credit
even after I had it 30 days beyond the return period,
but I decided to pass on this. That being said, if
anyone is interested in purchasing this CPU upgrade
from me for a reduced cost off retail (currently
$229), please contact me off list at
[EMAIL PROTECTED] and we can discuss the
details. The card will be sold as-is, but from what
I've read, it should work perfectly in 8600 / 9600
machines. Most successful reports have put 9600
machines being the best. I suspect the updated / newer
ROMs in the 8600 / 9600 class of machines helps.
I also have a 604 120MHz processor available. It is
great for a backup CPU if you run into problems with
your G3 or G4. I am offering it free, but with $4
postage. U.S. only. Again, please e-mail me if
interested.
Thank you.
Gordon Hawley
