I just found out yesterday that amazon is selling the latest (May 2005) iMac G5 2.0 GHz 17" for $1,100 -- minus a $100 rebate!
Much as I like to get the most out of my old equipment, it hardly seems worth spending much on upgrades any more! Also, the older I get (65 next month!) the less I want to spend my time on maintaining my computers as opposed to using them. Actually, if I can get a good deal on a reasonably fast G4 desktop, I may postpone the move to a G5, since I can't use my multiple hard drives and CD/DVD drives with the iMac and G5 desktops are still too expensive. If I do get the iMac anyway, I'll probably have to get a couple of USB 2.0 or FireWire external drive cases for my existing drives and figure out a way to read drives formatted with and for the Sonnet Tempo ATA cards. Either that, or I'll have to network the old computer to the new one, copy everything off the old drives, and reformat them in the external cases. (My existing drives, except for a couple of small SCSI drives, are 120 GB and 80 GB Maxtor 7200's.) I'm doing all this thinking out loud with the hope of getting feedback, especially if I'm operating under any misconceptions. (My original motivation for this post was to let y'all know about the cheap iMacs, but I get rather wordy late at night when I should be asleep!) - Aaron -- PCI-PowerMacs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
