I just found out yesterday that amazon is selling the latest (May 2005) iMac G5 2.0 GHz 17" for $1,100 -- minus a $100 rebate!

The release of the newest iMac G5 means prices on the Spring models should really drop. Check out the refurb deals and such from DealMac:

I think the Refurbished iMac G5/1.8GHz 17" for $749 shipped (+sales tax) is a killer deal!

Much as I like to get the most out of my old equipment, it hardly seems worth spending much on upgrades any more!

Right! At these prices, I'd sell as much of my "old" gear as possible and go for the newer stuff. I've toyed with the G5 iMacs at a friend's shop, and they're impressive!

Actually, if I can get a good deal on a reasonably fast G4 desktop, I may postpone the move to a G5, since I can't use my multiple hard drives and CD/DVD drives with the iMac and G5 desktops are still too expensive. If I do get the iMac anyway, I'll probably have to get a couple of USB 2.0 or FireWire external drive cases for my existing drives

I like the idea of external cases for your 7200 RPM drives. Makes a dedicated backup drive so much more do-able; easy to move around for backing up important stuff from multiple Macs, etc.

and figure out a way to read drives formatted with and for the Sonnet Tempo ATA

Shouldn't be a problem. Whichever drive controller was in use when you formatted the drives should make no difference at all. The controllers are supposed to be "transparent" as far as the drives are concerned; merely the bridge between the logic board and the hard drives, and not separate devices unto themselves that need special drivers or configuration.
