Listers,

I have a PM 7200 with 96MB RAM and 1.2 SCSI harddrive and running OS

machine I see that there is a red "x" on the virus scanner icon. When
I
look in the Extension Folder everything that is related to the virus
scanner
is highlighted.

Should I be concerned?

If you want to do the mental exercise of trying to track down an
extension problem, go ahead and try and figure it out.

If you are concerned about OS 9 virii, spyware or worms, don't worry.
There are none in the wild so using McAfee on an OS 9 Mac is like
paying for a magic charm to prevent you from being attacked by a
marauding elephant herd in Canada.

I think my thread earlier this year when the point was proven on this list and the Powerbook list that
no one has seen a viable virus for OS 8-9.x since the early nineties.
I have been warned by PC users about worms and Trojans but don't worry about those much either. If anyone has anything new to add feel free but please cite specifics and produce copies of the virus for study. I'm tired of hearing about fables and phantoms.

Worms and trojans possibly can be a nuisance for Mac users. If you have enough pc using friends that get infected, their pcs will email you the trojan or worm. Since these are pc .exe files (applications) they CAN NOT and will not run on or harm your mac. However, if you do not delete them from your email, they will eventually fill up your hard disk and that could be a nuisance.

If you blindly forward email, you could forward one of these to a pc user, but you would probably notice an unrecognized attachment going out with the message.

Also, if you are using virtual pc to get email (some corporate email systems are pc only), and get them on your virtual pc installation, they will run under virtual pc just as if they were on a real pc, but will not do any harm to your Mac setup.
