>Maybe so, but I dont even get a sad mac, just a black screen....
Which is what happened to my IIsi after it gave only one sad mac and the
chimes of death. Next time I tried to start it up, it acted exactly like
your 8600.
Ohh, that hurts! Had a 8100 AV die on me, probably because I took off
that "dongle"-thingy that HAD to sit in the extra video-port. Some
how that killed the mobo, and the mac. And I paid good money for it
too, since it came with two monitors (the previous owner had done
video editing on it).
Ugh. Uncscrewing that dastardly 9100 casing agaian? But I still think the
9100 is a 9100, although I can check against the apple specs. But isnt
9500 a machine u can make a g3 out of, whereas 9100 is one of those slooow
dead ends?
;o)
And yeah, the 8600 was a 250 mhz...
Hmmm, unscrewing the case... That's a 9500. The 9150 was based on the
Quadra 950, which has a side door that pops off, kinda like the 8600 case.
It also has five nubus slots. If I were going to keep my 950, I'd probably
be hunting for a 9150/120 logic board right now. If it is what I think it
is, then I guess what you could do, is transfer the 9500 motherboard to the
8600 case and turn the 8600 into a 9600... Then, just slap a G3 processor
into it. Otherwise, I could send you my 8500/120's motherboard and
processor, which would turn your 8600 into an 8600/120... Kinda slow.
But, it'd be alive again.
The "9100" is indeed a 9500, I just had remembered wrong. Right now
trying to figure who can supply me with the least expensive processor
card. Airmail Europe is costly, and considering the prices of the
card, it's almost as much to mail it as the price for the card
itself. All in order to see if I can still get that cool machine to
live. It was reasonibly fast, and with video in/out AND sound in/out
quite a cool mac. And the first owner sold it with a screen and some
software for NOK 10000, I think it was, about 5 years ago. Bet he
made a bundle! A dollar was then about 7 NOK, and infaltion in Norway
has been around 5% these last years. But then again, a NEW mac would
have cost at least twice... Then the state of art was the green/white
"smurf" G3s. And the iMacs were just coming out....
Paid a friend NOK 2000 last year for a desktop G3 w/21" apple screen,
scanner & useless Epson printer, + I got his fading Laserwriter
Select for free. I have the manuals for it, and plan on cleaning it
some day...
My g3 has plenty of RAM, the 8600 only half of what it could take,
half the slots (including VRAM) are empty.
The 8500: Did that have video in/out?
The 9500 does not have video in/out, btw...
Unless theres some way of transplanting that part...
Let's see what happens now. I think I have my sweaty hands on a "new"
processor for USD 10 + postage (wahtever that runs into). And
possibly a G3 upgrade, too....
:o) Peter
