A couple of weeks ago I inquired on the list about setting up for
Verizon DSL with my 6400, and got lots of encouragement and
information about setting it up and running it without Verizon's
software, which my machine can't run. As a result, I'm very near to
having it working; but I ran into an issue...
First the specs:
Performa 6400 / 180
Linksys DSL router model BEFSR41
Internet Explorer 5.1.7
Westell model 6100 DSL modem
Eudora v.5 (Lite )
Ok. Got the physical hook-ups made, used IE to configure router, and
got it to connect just fine. When I tried to load a web page, I got a
Verizon page of some sort that said I couldn't connect to the Verizon
network because they couldn't verify my user name and password.) All
very logical because I hadn't gotten one yet, and wasn't using the
Verizon software to facilitate that. So I called tech support, and
got the user ID and password. Plugged them into the "setup" page on
the Linksys browser page, and tried again. Nothing doing: got the
same page. (Even though I couldn't really get far, that tells me I
did get beyond the router.) It turns out that I cannot change the
password by typing it in and clicking "apply". It just keeps
reverting to some 16 digit thing. I tried the "passwords" tab and the
option to have all setting revert to factory defaults, but it didn't
change the password situation. My username went in and persists just
fine. How do I get my password to stick? otherwise I'm out of luck.
A related question: There is a place to select "connect on demand" on
that Linksys setup page, which I did, but how do I let I.E. and
Eudora Lite know that they are to demand to be connected? I did
configure the TCP/IP control panel to connect using ethernet, but
neither choosing a url from the 'favorites' menu or typing one out in
the address bar seemed to result in a connection.
