Beg to differ. Low leveling can breath new live into a SCSI but instantly
kill and IDE.
There's a nice little util for DOS called HDD Regenerator, if you can
hook your drive up to an x86 non-Mac machine (I still won't succumb to
calling them 'PCs') and boot it off a disk with this utility on it
(hint: look for Hiren's Boot CD), it can usually actually REPAIR (as
oposed to just mark bad, and it does work even if it takes a while) bad
sectors on a disk, plus you can low level it afterwards using the drive
manufacturer specific program.
Just a little tip for those with clunky-hard-drive-itis - sorry it
involves going near a horrible, evil machine, but there's no alternative
for the Mac.
