BAT - Bell Atlantic Telephone [Companies] aka Bell Atlantic Corporation --
the largest of the seven "baby" bells after the 1984 Justice Department
breakup of AT&T (American Telephone and Telegraph). AT&T got to keep Bell
Labs aka Bellcore, Western Electric, and Long Distance. Bell Atlantic
merged with Nynex (New York - New England Bell) in 1996 to become Bell
Atlantic Corporation.

The next two bells to merge were Pacific Telesis (Pacific Bell Telephone
Company aka PacBell ) and Southwestern Bell to form SBC Communications,
Inc. (Southwestern Bell Corporation). SBC also owns Ameritech (merged in
Oct 1999 which was one of the seven baby bells) and Nevada Bell.

U.S. West Communications Group merged with Qwest Communications
International, Inc in May 2000 to become Qwest Communications
International, Inc. (The Q -- Ride the Light).

VZN - Verizon Long Distance formed in June 2000 by merger of Bell Atlantic
Corporation and GTE (General Telephone and Electronics).

BellSouth Corporation (Bell South) is the last, at least for now,
independent Bell Operating Company (BOC)
