There may be software means of doing this, but my advice would be to invest in an inexpensive router. Connect the computers through the router to the modem and you have independant access to the internet as well as each other and as a benefit, there is a built in firewall in most routers.
Wired routers are generally less than $100 and in some cases (CompUSA) after rebates, are about $50.
