Thats exactly right. I have cable, but it behaves similarly to DSL. I have the cable modem connected to the cable and the output of that to the input of the router. I have 4 ports and connect the laptop to one and the desktop to the other. I have the laptop in one room and the desktop in another. I can then connect either machine to the internet via the same cable modem or can interconnect the two computers to pass files back and forth or operate on my genealogy master file on the desktop from the laptop. Really has simplified the handling of files and sharing between the two.
