Whoo, that's a long subject line, and the post is no exception
either. :-)

I have yet another problem with SP2 no surprise. I've searched
and searched for an answer and cannot find anything. One of
these issues I think I found the fix, but I'm leaving it in
this email in case anyone else has the problem #1. I still
have the issue #2.

1.
SP2 refuses to open ANY type of video file from a DIRECT LINK
unless ANY browser window is open. If it's a direct URL of the
file in an email, or if I put the URL in my address bar, it
will not open nor play. The ONLY WAY they will open and play,
is if any IE window is already open!

2.
There is another issue which is probably related to this, and
that is I no longer have the download progress indicator box
for video files! I have it as normal for ANY OTHER file type,
but not for any video files! This is the typical box that has
the download progress bar in it, and "OK", "Open" and "Cancel"
at the bottom. It just will not appear for video files. (Sort
of back to #1 now)....When I try and click the video's URL in
an email, or put its link in the address bar, IE will open and
at the lower left extreme corner of the browser window I can
see "downloading file......[whatever]", so it IS apparently
"downloading" the file, but the instant the download is
completed, the IE window immediately snaps shut, something that
appears to be that download progress box I mentioned above
"flashes" for a tenth of a second, then nothing. Video files
play fine on my HD, and if I enter the path in the address bar
of the file on my HD they also open and play fine. They just
will not do it from the internet from a direct link! I've
disabled all anti-malware programs, IE settings are the SAME as
they have been all along, all to no avail. I even tried
checking the box "Notify when downloads complete" and that
still didn't bring back the download progress box and of course
also did nothing for the video files not opening.

So, this is two problems which I think may be related; the
video files not opening and playing as described above (1),
and (2) the absence of the download dialog box with video
files. Extension seems to be irrelevant (.avi, mpg, mpeg,
etc.). Since I've been on SP2, this is the FIRST time I've
noticed this behavior with the DIRECT LINKS since I never
tried it before, but this problem with the download dialog
box not showing up (2) is NEW, this DID NOT happen some
weeks back, and I have no way of knowing when it started
exactly nor if any specific program caused it.

I just realized it's also doing this for zipped files, IF and
ONLY IF I "Open in current location" instead of downloading
them first. There's still no download progress indicator box
like you see when you DOWNLOAD the files instead of OPENING
them. If I **download** the file, I get the download indicator
as usual. Since all video files are set to play as you click
them without having to download them first (as I assume they
are on everyone's PC), there's no download progress box. I
found this page which sums it up great:
http://www.neowin.net/forum/lofiversion/index.php/t153340.html
I have having this exact same problem, but that box IS already
CHECKED, but whether it's checked or not does nothing for
opening files "on the fly". I DO NOT get the image you see
under "Right", I only get the image you see under "Wrong".

I went ahead and messed around in "Folder Options" and for the
video file extensions I checked the box "Confirm open after
download". Fine, that gets back the download PROMPT box, but
the files WON'T OPEN! It always says "file not found" when I
try and OPEN it right then and there, but, I *CAN DOWNLOAD*
it then play it fine!

Allow me to sum this up to clear up any confusion. (Hee hee).
:-) Clicking a video link in an email, or the video link in my
address bar, opens an IE window where you see what's in the
"Wrong" image example at that URL above. After the download is
complete, the IE window closes, some type of "download box"
flashes for a fraction of second, and the file never does play
nor does it open, that's it. I verified the same thing is
happening with .zip files ONLY when I try to OPEN THEM ON
THE FLY. If I turn on the prompt to "confirm after download"
and on the prompt window for the file that then opens up and I
click "OPEN", it will "open" a VIDEO file *PLAYER*, but says
"file not found". However this is NOT the case with zipped
files, it WILL OPEN them **ONLY FROM A WEBPAGE**, but
I STILL DO NOT GET any download progress box on a webpage
when I "Open" in the current location. If I try to download
the .zip file from a DIRECT LINK like in OE for example, or the
address bar, it will NOT open the file.

FIX for #1:
Ok, I believe I found the fix for that specific issue, partial
at least. I'm leaving this email as-is in the event that
anyone else has this problem. This was acting like a temporary
cache issue, and it was. It was "IE Privacy Keeper" doing
this. It is set to delete the temp net files folder when the
IE window is closed. What's happening, is when the IE
window closes, the cache is dumped, therefore the video
file or .zip file is NO LONGER IN the temp net files folder, so
it has nothing to open or play! I turned off this feature in
IE Privacy Keeper, and the VIDEO FILES will now OPEN and
PLAY as they should, but I STILL have no d'load progress
status box! Now the reason I say "partial fix" is I'm still
getting the SAME behavior with zipped files! Even though
I can open the temp net files folder and see the zipped file
there, it still will not OPEN the file "from the current
location". That's no big deal since I never do that anyway,
I only tested this video file problem with a zipped file to see
if the same thing happened; although I AM VERY curious
as to why I still can't open them from a direct link and only
from a webpage. (This problem DOES NOT happen on SP1
even though this exact same program was installed on it and
setup the same way).

The second and main problem (#2), which still remains, is the
absence of any d'load progress indicators for video files being
downloaded then opened on the fly.

Any info appreciated, (on #2).
