I should point out again that it's not so much any SPAM problem
I'm having due to this list, it's the UCE emails (as the name
implies here more so in this case; *UNSOLICITED* emails) that
are bothering me. I have received plain SPAM before some time
back due to this list and had to delete my email address and
sub under another again, but since then it hasn't happened
much. My chief complaint is people emailing my address now for
private support for their name brand PC's with which the
manufacturer refuses to help them; or asking for drivers or
software; how to fix certain problems; etc., all which I
touched on the archives. They see all my replies in the
archives found in some search engine search, then it's "Hey,
let's email this guy and see if he knows" sort of thing that is
then transpiring.

I've been talking to mail-archive.com about this, and these
jerks are basically saying "if you don't like it, then tough".
They also "claimed" that this now infamous button now in the
archives at the bottom of every single post page "Reply via
email to [whomever]" was ALWAYS THERE, which is BS. I've never
seen it before, and several that contacted me off list also
said they've never seen it before.

To my knowledge Peter, there have NEVER been any email
addresses in the archives, not even in the form of images
(until this button). Any email addresses that may have been in
the message bodies of posts or replies to posts, are replaced
with "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" instead of the email address, which I
always thought was a sensible and great thing. If you check
your post below in the archives, the email address you put in
your message body has been replaced with this "[EMAIL
PROTECTED]" tag.

Personally I have no problem with email lists being archived,
nor indexed by Search Engines. I think archives are a must for
many helpful reasons, but also Lord knows how many times I've
searched using an SE to find info on something and in the
results many hits were from email lists' archives. I then went
to respected list's archives and found needed info. The
problem is having members' email addresses from said email
lists in public view for public usage/abuse; which again IMO is
a privacy violation and mark my words, WILL ALSO be a security
issue. If anyone wants to lodge a complaint about this usage
of our email addresses in the archives, send them to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] , [EMAIL PROTECTED] ,
[EMAIL PROTECTED] .

I'm REALLY NOT trying to launch some kind of "campaign" against
Mail-Archive.com, but I DO NOT APPRECAITE this abuse of my
email address nor my time, and I know I'm not alone. I've had
a few off list emails expressing the same.

  Happy holidays everyone!

I use a number of lists with this address and I do not get
any spam with
it, unlike my previous address ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) which
was
  circulated for 5 years.

I've seen some discussions over harvesters being run on lists
where
owners have switched showing addresses in text over to
showing them as
graphics, I remember this list did it at one time, why it
stopped I do
not know. Perhaps Marlene can explain?

Now many lists that use secure(?) archives where only
subscribed members
may access the messages have benefited from that as well. I
am on a few
lists with extremely high traffic in the 600 posts a day
range and I do
not receive spam from them or because of them, coincidentally
they are
all on yahoo groups (go figure).

As with this list too, I do not get any spam, my spam filters
at my
email host are very active though not on this particular
address. My
email addys for web dev groups are spammed the most.

You're quite diplomatic Clint, I would like to know if any
other persons
who do answer the questions also have spam problems with the
list.

(Peter I thought we got your email program sorted out the other
day, but I still can't get your posts! I found this in the
archives. I'll have to check my email filters again).

Thanks for the info. That may be that it is secure, but that
doesn't stop anyone from clicking the email address links and
sending emails to those that post. That is my main problem
now. I got several more emails today from "strangers" asking
me various things about my posts (wanting me to send them
drivers, software, info, etc). It's only a matter of time
before spammers find their way into the email addresses, and
note the comment "known SpamBots". There are many bots that
are currently UNknown, and as well know all it takes is ONE
TIME to destroy a business or screw-up a person's life. I
don't see the point of doing this (having members' addresses at
the archive site). Believe me, nothing good can come from it.

Other than my customers, I answer emails **from THIS LIST
and this list ONLY** regarding support because from time to
time I have to post questions here. Even though I rarely get
answers, I like to give back more than I receive from the list.
If I wanted I could set my list mail to "no mail" and only
re-sub when I need answers, but I don't, that's not right. I
don't have any more time on my hands to answer emails
from every "Tom, Dick and Harry non-list member" if you know
what I mean. ;-) And, it's rather irritating to receive them.
I'm not ranting at you, it's just the fact that this "breech"
exists. :-) This is only something recent, so I really
question the "logic" behind mail-archive.com doing such a
thing. To me, this is a privacy issue and list members SHOULD
have the OPTION of making their email addresses public or not.

Most of the list members may not have a problem with it since
most list members only post questions. It's..... (how do I put
this diplomatically)............hmmm......those like myself,
you, Hugh, Tom and t0m, Jeff, Keith, Ben, Jim, Sue, Roger W.,
Karl, John O., and a few others, that do most of the replying
with answers or help--it is us that's going to be the ones that
are going to be getting these emails such as I've been
receiving, since *in the archives* we may appear to be a bit
more knowledgeable than most list members regarding
computers and the net. (That come out right? ;-) The more
one of us replies with help to members that ask for help, the
more likely we are to receive these personal types of emails
from these non-list members.
