Hi Bram,

Ping only works for TCP/IP not Microsoft Networks, at least you know TCP/IP is
working.
Go to start then run and type CMD at the prompt Type Net Share This will show
what is shared on your
local machine. To see what is shared on others Type Net View \\computername
Net Help gets you help
Net /? Gets all commands for Net. This will help some.

You do have simple file sharing enabled it is by default. You haven't hid your files under sharing
by making them private have you. I think you have to have something shared for it to show up automatically. Sharedocs should show up it is enabled by default.
Thing is the shares on the other computers should show up automatically at least the sharedocs.

The best command for finding Microsoft problems is NBTSTAT typing this at the prompt will get you help.
The main thing With M$ networks is Each machine must have a unique name, should be a member of the same workgroup, and file shearing must be enabled. I have heard of problems. Although MS put a lot of effort into the master browser concept, there are many issues with it that they did really try getting out from under it with Windows 2000. I haven't had any problems With XP but I haven't set any Static IP machines up for years. I just led DHCP or WINS deal with it.

Since you are assigning static IP addresses and not using DHCP or WINS server to assign IP addresses Netbios names you may have to manually create a hosts file and import it to each machine. Do a find files for LMHOSTS.sam add all the IP addresses and NetBIOS names to it. The examples are included in the file, or you can find more info on the net. Save the edited file as LMHOSTS without the .sam extension. Reboot then use the config manager to import the list to each machine. If you need clarification or more help just let us know.

Thanks Tom but again as I said I can ping each computer from any other and , in fact, if I use "search" I can read any computer. They just don't show up in " Network places".
So it can't be "file sharing" nor the computer names. Justdoesn't make any sense to me but I'm sure I'm missing something simple!!!

Hi Bram,

You may not have file sharing enabled on any of the computers. In My Network Places right click for properties. Click Local area Connection then properties for it. In local area connection properties check that you have, Client for Microsoft Networks and File and printer sharing for Microsoft networks available, and enabled, in the This connection uses the following items: list. If they are not on the list you will have to install them. Also be sure that each computer has a unique name. For that you right click on My Computer and then choose properties then the Computer Name tab.
