I have a Toshiba bottom end laptop that I bought almost two years ago. I recently upgraded to a 40 gig hard drive. The easiest way is to buy an external housing with a usb connection, place the new drive in it, then use TrueImage or similar to replicate the current drive on the new. With true image, I could choose if I wanted to partition or not (I did not) and it was a simple (but long) process to make an image on the new drive. No rereg or any of that with XP. Then I just swapped drives and now have a 20 gig external for the laptop and a 40 internal. It was well worth the $30 or so for the external housing. I found that the NexStar from Zipzoomfly does a great job and the firmware works with instant recognition by the USB (I have had problems with other enclosures self-starting). You can look at the enclosure at

(I have no connection to this company, but have had very good service from them and am satisfied with all contacts.)

I just got a larger hard drive for my laptop and wondered what all is involved
in adding it.
I would like to swap from the existing one once in a while until I get all the
files transferred.
1. Can I plug in the new HD and insert the Dell installation disk(This is a
Dell Inspiron 2600).
2. When needed, can I install the original one to copy files to my external
hard drive?
Any special configuration I need to know?
Dell has not been much help when I have asked about upgrading...
This thing had one 64M of RAM mounted under the keyboard that was mentioned in
the specs as not being
accessible by the consumer..but it's the same as the one under the bottom of
the unit, so I ordered a 256
stick to stick in there.
Thank you.
