Most of them come with some type of "auto-shutdown" software 
for unattended shut downs of the PC.

The gizmo is a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply).

Popular suppliers: APC (American Pow Conversion), Belkin, Tripp
Lite.  FWIW I use an APC unit and am happy with it.
