What OS is the laptop running? Post your ipconfig file /all so we can
see the settings when it's set up wirelesssly.
What wireless adapter? Have you looked for driver updates?
I'm doing something similar, but with Tivo, and I've only got 4000 MP3s,
but I can share photos as well.

I have one old notebook set up on my home network as a music server. It has
a large external USB drive attached which hold my 8000 mp3's. The
computer/drive is shared as "MUSIC". It is hardwired to the network (not
wireless).
While I have no problem seeing the Music Drive on any of my wired PC's (or
my wired AudioTron) I can't seem to see it with a wireless connection. (The
Wireless connection works fine for the internet and all and my LinkSys
WRT54G router provides the remote wireless computer a valid IP). If I plug
the same laptop into a network wire it sees the home network (and the music
drive) fine. Wirelessly I can't access the home network (including the
music drive).
I am running (foolishly) an unsecured wireless connection. I have played
with and disabled software firewalls (XP and ZoneAlarm). I have the router
set to "trust" the range of IP addresses that include the remote wireless
laptop.
