Go to this page http://www.theeldergeek.com/shutdown_issues_in_xp.htm . Scroll down a little to the "It's Now Safe To Turn Off Your Computer" section. See if your Power Options in the control panel looks like this. If it does, just check the "Enable Advanced Power ..." box. If it doesn't, go to Device Manager (right click on My Computer, select properties, then Hardware then Device Manager) and click on the + sign next to Computer and see what type of computer Windows thinks you have.
