FWIW, Tom contacted me off-list and verified he meant DOWNload
and not upload (upstream) speeds. He said: "I don't have any
problem obtaining what my downstream and upstream speeds are,
what I am curious about is if it is
normal for the speeds to decrease when telephones are plugged
into the same phone line."

Tom, I had just assumed that Earthlink was also your phone
service! Apparently not. I'm just so used to having BellSouth
telephone service, and their DSL as well. So, what Ben said
about them possibly saying "it's not our problem" is probably
true in that case. However, everything else I said still holds
true.

Run the tests that Clint mentioned.

You may have already done that. It's entirely possible that
something is
messed up in your inside wiring and by plugging in a phone you
are effecting
the line throughput.. The DSL filters provided by EarthLink
should work as
well as any. A different modem shouldn't matter especially
since you get
max speed without any phones connected.

The problem you are going to have is dealing with two different
companies,
the phone company and EarthLink. If you pay the phone company
a monthly fee
for inside wiring support you might call them and explain the
problem. If
you don't have inside wiring support, you are going to pay $90+
and hour for
them to come out. EarthLink is going to say it's your wiring
and it's not
their problem.

You might test the phones separately and see if one cuts the
speed down more
than the other. Telephones differ greatly these days in quality
and
construction.

I would call EarthLink and get them to certify that there
should be no
decrease in speed with telephones plugged into the line. Then
, if I had
inside wiring support with the phone company, I'd call them and
make them
come out and check my lines and figure out what's going on.
Without inside
wiring support, I'd probably live with it. $90 an hour on an
open ended
service call can get really expensive.

When I have just one phone connected to the phone line my
EarthLink DSL upstream speed is usually 1024 Kbps. When I
have two phones connected the upstream speed is 864 Kbps.
When I have no phones connected the upstream speed is, as I
remember, 1536 Kbps. I am using the DSL filters that came
with the EarthLink installation kit on each phone. I am also
using the DSL modem provided by EarthLink.

The upstream connection speed is also reduced by having the
phone line going through the protection circuit on the UPS I
have.

Is there a way I can obtain the 1536 Kbps upstream speed and
still have two phones connected to the phone line?

Can I purchase DSL filters that might be better than the ones
provided by EarthLink?

Would a different DSL modem give me better connection speed?

Would different phones perhaps not have an effect on the
upstream speed?

Thanks,
Tom
