Hi Meir and all,

The hard drive may have a "parking" problem.  If you are confident that
you can work on the inside of the computer safely, i.e. ground yourself
first, then try this: Turn off the computer and anything attached to it. 
Unplug the computer and wait ten seconds.  Unplug any other connected
devices if necessary to open the side panel.  Open the side panel and
unplug the flat and wide ribbon cable from a PATA hard drive or the much
thinner cable from a SATA hard drive.  Leave the power connector attached
to the drive.  Power on the computer for a moment and then power down the
machine.  Disconnect power as before and re-attach the cable.  This might
not work as it is possible that the drive is simply starting to fail
prematurely.  Good luck.
