When I unchecked hibernation the hiberfil.sys
file was deleted immediately (no need to turn the
computer off and on). Checking hibernation
caused the hiberfil.sys file to immediately
return. Be sure to hit the apply button after
checking and unchecking the hibernation box.

There is a sleep button on my keyboard. My power
setup is now programmed to go into hibernation
when that button is pushed. When my APC
uninterruptable power supply notifies me that
there is a power failure, pushing that button
will save all the work in progress within a few
seconds. When power returns
and the computer is turned on, it will return from
hibernation at the exact point where it was, with
no loss of data.

This is a great feature if you are subject to the
occasional power failure.
