The Postscript is NOT rasterized! It's converted to a fully "native" PDF. It's literally Acrobat Distiller built into the OS!
However, yes, a programmer can ask the OS to then take the PDF in question and rasterize it to a bitmap if there was a reason to do this (eg. conversion to TIFF, etc.).
Can it be used for anything other than viewing, such as integrating within another product?
Yup, there is an API call to convert PS to PDF...
