Agreed.

Yes. That's why it might be relevant to fill the toolbox with a substantial
number of tools that each are dedicated to specific tasks. In the long run
this is cheaper than fighting against problems with a tools that perhaps can
solve the problem, but only at the cost of investing additional time.

Jacob,

"I'd like to see that production environment that can afford to use this
approach for a 200 pages document."

Well of course that would be a problem... I was assuming, perhaps naively,
that some common sense would come into play.

"First, Illustrator is NOT, repeat NOT, a general purpose PDF editor. Using
Illustrator for this task is dangerous ".

And I'll agree with that too. But if that is the only option, and the
document is fairly simple, and you pay attention, you can pull this off. But
yes, only as last resort, and surly not with a 200 page doc.

My suggestions are based on things that have worked in our production
envirnment. Of course, our first choice would be PittStop, and that is what
we use. But if one does not see enough of this sort of thing to justify
buying it, or even the reasonably price QBT, then these are just some other
possible solutions. They all come with their own risks.
