I appreciate all 3 of the responses to my questions about PDFs from
Illustrator. It's more info than I can take on right this minute, but I've
printed out one of the links, taken a preliminary look at two others, and
created a DEVONthink PE file with your links and advice.

The advice to determine the specific requirements of each publishing
situation is good, of course, but I also would like to standardize on a
"mainstream" PDF for general, quick use in "basic" situations.

It will probably be Illy... File... Save As... PDF. The one I made as a test
seemed fine. It will probably be Acrobat 5 (is that PDF 1.5?) for two
reasons: A) our newspaper gets Acrobat 5 PDFs from advertisers and they work
fine, B) when I see what happens to Illustrator 10 features rendered in
Acrobat 4 I don't much like it.

One motivation for wanting to streamline the process is so I can more often
use AI10 to design ads rather than the house standard, Quark 4.11.

In tests last weekend, Quark 4.11 imported my PDF files, and displayed them
with low res preview images. They printed low res to my inkjet, and "high"
res to the Postscript laser. Enhance Preview XT-SE doesn't seem to improve
their display. Be nice to get better res on page proofs, but maybe that's
not available.

"Illustrator Tips: Exporting Print- and Web-Ready PDFs" on the
creativepro.com site says, in small part, "You can also make PDFs in Adobe
Illustrator, although the resulting file won't be as robust as that created
in Acrobat." Time to leave this computer, read the article, and see if they
offer any detail on PDF robustness and the lack of it.

Thanks again... chuck m
