Hi All...

I'm stucked...
... and confused...

Platform: Mac OS 9.2.2
Hardware: Macintosh G3 266 MHz Server (Former... : Now Distilling is It's only purpose, as I want to free up my own G4 workstation...)
Distiller: Acrobat Distiller 5
Allocated memory: 384 MB

Original Document: QuarkXPress 4.11
Size: A4, 64 pages
Master Spread: Containing 1 black over all - background and 44 small (Wheel Rims) - images (1"x1")TIFF, 300 dpi, CMYK, compressed and saved from Photoshop 7
and table text.

Output settings: Not from within Quark's export, but printing to a PS file for Print, using Adobe PS 8.7.3 and Distiller PPD, at 2400 dpi/175lpi, dropped into a hot folder for print...
Compression / JobOptions setting: ZIP (main reason for getting as lossless PDF as possible
Limit: Compress images above 450 dpi.

The Distiller has worked fine in all previous projects.

PROBLEM:
Distilling the PS file randomly jaggies these small images...
The resolution is retained at 300 dpi, no resampling / no change...

At an output of 8 pages, the file comes out OK from a PS file at around 180 MB.

When I print and distill the whole PSfile, 64 pages, 1.2 GB PS file, I get jaggies around the rims, as they would have been JPG compressed

Outputting 8 pages again with the same (checked...) ZIP compression, it looks like sh-t again.... Huh???

Running PitStop and analyzing the file, I do notice that they're JPG compressed, - although - Hot folder joboption is set to ZIP... Huh? again...!

Outputting 8 pages again with the same (checked...) ZIP compression, it looks like OK again.... Huh??? again and again...!

Q: Is it possible that Distiller randomly "forget"s it's own folder joboptions sometimes..?
Q: These compressed TIFF's from Photohop... I assume they are unpacked and then re-compressed again in Distiller... Can this be a reason...?
Q: Can it be a hardware problem comparing with the file size at 1.2 GB versus too less memory..?
Q: Too many items on the pages/Spread in combination with too much text?

Beats me...
Any ideas, anyone out there...?

Regards // Lennart
