You can insert comment lines in a PDF, which are preceeded by a "%". I recommend placing them after or within the PDF trailer. At the end of every PDF file is the line "%EOF". You may be able to simply append your comments there. Some PDF viewers may object to this however. Reader 5 and Acrobat 6 both opened a test file I just whipped up without complaint. --Mark Storer Software Engineer Cardiff Software #include <disclaimer> typdef std::disclaimer<Cardiff> Discard; > -----Original Message----- > From: Chris Hylton [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Sent: Tuesday, June 24, 2003 11:08 AM > To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Subject: [PDFdev] editing header info in a PDF... > > > > PDFdev is a service provided by PDFzone.com | http://www.pdfzone.com > _____________________________________________________________ > > hello, > > i'm new to the group, and i feel like this has been covered, > but haven't > really found a definitive answer even after searching google > and sites like > this. > > currently developing a solution for a client where a scanner > produces a PDF > (tiff image embedded in some pretty standard PDF file > 'tags')...what i was > hoping to do was create a simple VB function in a back-end > app that will > pick up that PDF and insert some 'comments' in the beginning > of the file > (not visible when the PDF opens in the reader. basically, > the goal is to > make the files searchable (from a Windows directory > structure) by placing > some values inside the PDF...again, may not be possible, but > haven't found > anything definitive. > > i also need to do this w/o installing Acrobat on the client/server > machine...licensing and cost issues w/ doing that...i've > worked w/ the > Acrobat SDK some in the past, and this isn't an option in this case. > > from everything i've read, sounds like this isn't possible due to the > structure of the PDF file...once edited and resaved, the file becomes > un-usable...even if i just open a PDF in notepad and resave > it, it gets > corrupted. > > any ideas to accomplish this w/o having Acrobat installed and > using the > object model to modify the PDF ? > > Thanks, > Chris > > _________________________________________________________________ > Add photos to your e-mail with MSN 8.
