Lexigraph has always used the term "Optimized PDF" with respect to our pdfExpress products. We take it to mean that unique Cos object appear exactly once in the PDF file.
Is that true for all types of objects, or only Image XObjects? Do you also locate and address the duplication of Fonts, Shadings, etc??
However, this has nothing to do with RIP performance. Virtually all RIPs convert each page, one at a time, to PostScript - expanding all images, etc. in-line prior to the PostScript interpreter seeing them.
I would be surprised that this is exactly how it is done (ie. out of context from the other pages), since I would expect that most RIPs would be smart enough to use PS forms for caching XObjects and also other techniques for Font caching.
In general, the only RIP optimization you can do at the PDF file level is to make sure all the images are no larger (in bits) than they need to be.
And that no objects that aren't going to be used are present...(eg. if you're not using OPI, the info shouldn't be in the file).
