Wow!  Very nice work, indeed.  The makeup artist is very
important in glamour shots like this, helping to smooth and hide
any lines and blemishes. The lighting is also extremely
important.  Study it very closely and see if you can duplicate
it. Note the locations of the shadows, when there are any.

Yes, he does obviously overexpose, as he told you.  Then he
prints on high contrast paper to take the skin tones to white,
losing the rest of the detail the makeup artist couldn't fill
in.  The dark clothing, dark hair, and dark eye makeup enhancing
the contrast. The models being young made that an easier job.

I'd guess that he follows the line of thought that, if your
pictures aren't interesting enough, you aren't close enough.
Which is an excellent guideline.

There's no faulting him for his choice of subject matter, is
there?
