Make sure it is at least an f4.0 or preferably faster (i.e. f2.8 is great). Also make sure the lens is set to infinity, and that the camera AF is set to single rather than servo focus. It will work on servo, but will easily zoom off somewhere else if the point of focus changes by as little as a couple of millimeters.
It's usually a 50mm f/1.4 and, after getting advice on this list several months ago, I make sure to set it to infinity.
