I've used an SMC Takumar 300mm/4.0 and the more modern A*300/4.0.
They deliver similar results and the A* cost me 10X as much.
While the A*300/4.0 is really nice, I would start with the Takumar.
Image quality is good.  You will probably use it on a tripod. 
And, you are going to be nearly wide open or at least prefocused to start.
The having to stop down the Takumar will not be too inconvenient.

We have some very good birders who have followed the list.
Mark Cassino and John Mustarde come to mind.
Check some of their images on the web.

After a while trying some of this kind of photography,
you will find that you could always use a longer and faster lens. <g>
