My guess is the shallow DOF combined with a distant and blurred
background makes for a flat, two-dimensional "bird on a stick" photo.
Depth of field for these photos was less than one inch (840mm/f8 at 18
feet = .75 inch or 19mm.)

These photos are different from what I usually see. Normally I expect
a three-dimensional effect shooting digital at 300mm or 420mm. The
flatness you mention is something I noted also. I've always enjoyed
the effect of shooting a 600/f4 and blurring the background, but this
is going beyond a simple pleasing effect.

 I haven't made up my mind yet what needs to be done, but it may be
that 840mm without grain in the background is simply a new factor to
work with, modify,  or avoid.
