I doubt that many *istD buyers will have a clear understanding what an LX is, much less the history of Pentax support or lack of support for pro gear. People will buy a Pentax DSLR for the same reasons people now buy Pentax cameras - best bang for the buck, in a package that is ergonomic for the buyer. A price lower by one or two hundred dollars is a substantial incentive to many camera buyers, especially if the perceived features set is the same or better than higher priced gear from another manufacturer. Fact is, Pentax users are cheapskates who look at the short term rather than buying into a system. A good, cheap DSLR which accepts bargain basement old Ebay lenses and accessories fits right in with the Pentax market. If it is not good, or not cheap, Pentax has missed their market. At this point in the DSLR market, Pentax is a third-party camera maker, much like Sigma and Tokina are third-party lens makers. Just like Sigma and Tokina, Pentax has to offer more for the consumers money compared to mainstream 35mm DSLR manufacturers... and in doing so Pentax will sell lots of *istD cameras. -- John Mustarde www.photolin.com
