There is a lot of used Canon AF gear for sale because tons of it has been sold. The percentage of for sale/not for sale equipment is probably no greater for Canon than anyone else. I think that Canon made 1 AF body that used EF mount lenses. They do not make any now. Due to economy of scale, and Canon being a well run company, you get more "bang for the buck" from them than any other maker. There are reasons beyond "everybody else is a jerk", that Canon has 10 times more of the film SLR market than Pentax.

What this means to me is, there are a lot of people selling a lot of
EOS gear! Why is that, do you suppose?

+ second-hand items available at top prices

By 'top prices' do you mean expensive? If you do mean expensive, how
does this rate as a plus?
Perhaps you could elaborate.

- no mechanical body in the program

By "in the program" do you mean "no plans to build any?" I am not impressed with Canon's lack of mechanical bodies/lenses.
I don't know Canon that well at all ~ do they make a manual body at
all? Did they ever, in recent times? And if so, is it at all
compatible with present day lenses, like Pentax does?

On the other hand, if this comparison is only going to concern itself
with the EOS system, I'll back off and not post non-pertinent comments.

The more automation you build into a camera, it seems to me the more
expensive it becomes. Add to that a rather high premium being paid for
the name, and that is another minus... In my mind.

My 2¢...
