That's the big beast in action - the 250-600 zoomed all the way to 600.

I've found a 300mm lens is often too short for motorsports shots. On the
days when I'm too lazy to lug the monster around I carry a A300/2.8. With
the 1.7AF adapter I get a very reasonable auto-focus 500/4.5.  And a 2X-L
(if I ever accquire one) would give me that 600 reach, while staying at f5.6.

I used to own a Tamron 300/2.8. That's the best value for money in the
fast telephotos, in my opinion. You can sometimes find one in Pentax AF
mount. I didn't - my one was the Adaptall model. It's almost as good
as the Pentax 300, and costs less than half as much new. You can often
find one on the used market somewhere around the $1000 mark, depending
on condition, and whether or not it comes with case and 1.4 & 2.0 TCs.

The only reason I switched from the Tamron to the Pentax 300/2.8 was
because I got the Pentax (and 1.4-L) for a good price, it's somewhat
easier to fit and remove the TCs, and the metal case stands up to my
rough treatment better than the rigid leather case of the Tamron.
Optically there's no discernible difference under motorsports shooting
conditions.  Even a stricter test has difficulty spotting differences;
my personal testing showed a slight loss of sharpness, wide open,
when used with 1.4X TCs. Used without TCs, or stopped down to f5.6,
I couldn't tell the two lenses apart.
