I am disappointed to hear that I have to look out for pickpockets (which also influences how much camera gear I carry and how I carry it.) I had thought Singapore was, if anything, too law abiding.

The locals will tell you that in Singapore you can do anything you want. Just don't get caught. :-)

The advise to look out for petty crime seems to be standard travel advice and Singapore is not 100% crime-free. As long as you don't make yourself a target I don't think you'll have any problems. Most thieves would probably go for C***n and N***n anyway. :-)

By the way, two of the people who are on the tentative agenda for my meetings there are last name Ong. Is this a common name? I know the two of them are not related...

I think it's one of the most common Chinese last names. The Chinese character for "Ong" can also be phonetically rendered as "Wong", "Wang", or Heng depending on the dialect that is used to pronounce it when it is spelled out.
