In that case, it would seem that the Sandisk card reader may not be quite
all its cracked up to be...but you figured that out already. If it's any
consolation, the Sandisk Ultra FW card reader works perfectly and is fast.

nope. device and motherboard support USB 2.0. i have used USB 2.0 hard
drives on the same port at full speed. the motherboard has builtin Firewire
too.
