Hmm, so... does IS/VR somehow require USM?

Perhaps that particular design offered enough space for both devices. However, if you look inside some of the Pentax AF lenses, F/FA*300/4.5 for instance, the moving lenses are located at the back of the lens, and the mechanical aperture arm runs right through it. It is practically impossible to fit a USM motor in this lens, unless the mechanical aperture arm was removed. There are many other Pentax lenses with similar designs as well.
