My guess is simply that no-one is buying high-end Pentax gear, so Pentax
is no longer producing things like the MZ-S and the FA 80-200/2.8
Pentax users seem more inclined to buy 80-200/4.5-6.7 kinda lenses, and
Pentax's market share is so weak already that this is where they have to
focus.

One thing is certain: the sales of high-end film gear has dropped significantly.
Pentax, who has catered for existing customers only the last decade, the drop must be
even worse than for the rest. Virtually everyone who ever wanted a high-end Pentax
lens has already bought one. As their digital slr is mostly bought by people who
already own Pentax lenses, no new lens sales in the FA* series is so far generated by
digital.
However, the FA* 80-200/2.8 is made made on order anyway, like all of the fast super
telephotos, it makes not much sense to discontinue it uless its getting replaced. It
could be that the dissapearance from price list show more wnat the distributors in
question choose to stock than what Pentax choose to manufacture. Start to worry when
they dissapear from Pentax Japan web site.
