The fact is that disregarding all the repro-ratio basis of DOF calculation the apparent DOF is a far more complex issue than the simple traditional DOF calculators suggest. Factors including absolute sharpness and the plane of focus and the rendition of the OOF areas (bokeh) plus spherical and perspective distortion all affect apparent DOF. It's just not as simple and as fundamental as it's made out to be. Knowing the characteristics of your actual lenses is a far more valuable asset to any serious photographer.
