what's true for you isn't necessarily true for others. I, for
instance, am at best an average b&w technician, and I know that there
are many, many people out there who can produce better prints from my
negatives than I can

Again, I disagree. I have more _actual_ control (rather than merely
_sense of_ control) over the final appearance of the print if I work
with a talented printer than if I try to do it myself.

Consider it collaboration if you like. Rodgers & Hammerstein, Lennon &
McCartney, Bill & Ben, Marks & Spencer, Ronnie & Reggie, ...
