Really?  Whenever I use an A lens on my *ist-D (either alone or in
combination with the AF 1.7x adapter) the camera insists on using
only the central auto-focus point, no matter what selection I make.
This behaviour is documented on p75 of the *ist-D manual.  Perhaps
you've turned off focus point confirmation, and so are unaware of
exactly what the camera is doing.

As to the flash - you could be right there.  I don't have an external
flash that can do P-TTL, and I don't generally use the built-in flash,
so I was basing what I said on the chart in the appendix to the manual.
As noted in another post, Pentax contradict this on a different page.
