Rob, I have always treated you with the greatest of respect, so rather than tell you that you don't know what you are talking about, I will instead, invite you to try to find a 70's era Playboy magazine and have a look at the technical merits of the centerfold.
The gamut is, admitedly, limited to the gamut of the inkset, just like today. That hasn't changed.
As for the rest, as anyone who has seen one will attest, the quality was pretty spectacular.
